5 Reasons Why You Should Never Work Without a Contract

Story Thumbnail

The most popular scams in the modeling industry is to get people to work without a contract based on promises of a contract in the future.  To many people, it’s pretty obvious that you should never work with contract, but sometimes a sales pitch is so strong that fools even the best of us.  Even if you think that working without a contract might benefit you in the future, I have some tips that might change your mind.

1. Think about every other business, and ask yourself if any other professional would work without a contract.  The contract basically guarantees you your part of the equation, and if you work without one in a company get your services without having to guarantee you anything.  A baseball player wouldn’t work without a contract, and neither would anyone else.  Modeling is no different from the rest.

2. If you don’t get contracts, and you have no recourse if the company does not live up to their promises.  You’ve got to get everything in writing or else you risk working for free, plain and simple.  If you try to take the company to court, but you don’t have a contract to back up your claims, then you have got nothing.

3. A lot of modeling scams will try to take your money up front and off to contract down the road.  As you can imagine, as soon as you give them your money they either disappear or they never fulfill their end the bargain.  Any time that money changes hands, a contract should be signed by both parties that states every aspect of the agreement.

4. If you work without a contract, even if the company has your interests in mind, then you risk being strung out over a long period of time.  A contract guarantees you a specific amount of money, work, and services within a certain period of time.  A contract will guarantee that your job is complete and that you can schedule more jobs down the road.

5. Lastly, if you don’t have a contract, then you’ve got nothing to show for your work.  However, even if you got a contract you need to make sure that the contract is actually legit.  A lot of scammers will try to offer you a fake contract with language that you might not understand or that they don’t intend to back up.  Make sure you read each and every aspect of the contract so you know exactly what you’re getting, what you’re giving up, and what you’re recourse is in the event of a breach of contract.

Working without a contract is like working for free.  Even if you all are a freelancer, then you need a contract for each individual job.  Having a contract not only protect yourself, but protects the company you are working for.  Any legitimate company with will want a contract anyway, so if you’re working for a company that actually need a contracts, and they’re probably a scammer anyway.  You should judgment, and only work with companies that are professional in appearance and in performance.

Know of any other good reason to make sure you get a contract before you work?  Do you have any horror stories of non contract jobs that went bad?Tell me
